DECIPHERING LUCY · SECTION 25 OF 74
Chapter Twenty-Two — Through the Memory Field
The forest gave way to static.
Not noise—but air laced with shimmer. The field glowed faintly, like heat rising from etched circuits buried in the earth.
The Fox's stance stayed low. His ears still danced at every invisible signal.
Lucy's voice came hushed. "What is this place?"
"A Memory Field," Aven answered. "A kind of trap. But not for us. For memory. It collects what was left behind."
Echo moved slower now. The name of the field had changed him somehow. He brushed his fingers along a rusted, broken relay tower jutting like a ribcage through soil.
"Sometimes the system plays back what it can't forget," he said.
The wind didn't move. But sound did. A low murmur rising—not quite voices, not quite noise.
Almost like thoughts whispered just before they turned to dreams.
"This was not the design…"
"We sealed the root—why does it still pulse?"
"The girl wasn't meant to wake…"
Lucy staggered back. "Did you hear that?"
Aven nodded slowly. "Not everyone hears the same thing."
The Fox's voice came quiet but grim. "I hear screams that never stop."
A pause.
"We shouldn't stay here."
But Lucy's attention caught on something half-buried near her feet. A small device, its face cracked, blinking once—just once—in perfect time with her pulse.
She reached for it—
And for just a breath in time—
She saw her mother.
Not as she remembered her. But as a preserved echo in the code. A shimmer. A suggestion. A version of her the system hadn't let go.
Alive? No.
Dead? Not quite that either.
Just… remembered.
Lucy's breath caught.
She stood slowly, fingers trembling. "I… I need to keep going."
No one objected.
As they moved past the edge of the field, the Fox turned once more, gaze sweeping behind them.
"Something's watching again," he said. "Closer this time."
Black String did not walk. He folded.
His form was suggestion, not presence. A distortion held together by decision and recursion.
He didn't see the world in vision, but in values. Corrupted strands. Incomplete paths. Variables left untended. Each a thread of possibility he no longer trusted.
The Watchers hovered around him, orbiting thought like moons without mass.
"She touched the field," one of them said.
"Did it wake the loop?" another asked.
"It… destabilized," a third replied.
Black String stirred.
"She is aligning. Faster than expected. The Architect's signature still clings to her. And the Fox…"
A flicker passed across the space where his face might've been.
"The Fox was supposed to be erased."
He moved toward a blank screen that pulsed—not with data, but with memory.
"Begin Pattern 77."
One of the Watchers hesitated. "That's for primary deviation. She's still within design range—"
"No," String interrupted. "She isn't a deviation anymore. She's a threat. And I intend to cut the thread."
A low groan reverberated across the chamber, like a cathedral of mirrors fracturing in unison.
"Do not engage," he whispered. "Not yet. I want to see what she chooses next."
And in the silence after Black String's command, the field of watchers fell still—waiting for a girl who did not yet know what she'd already set in motion…
