DECIPHERING LUCY · SECTION 08 OF 74
Chapter Five — First Breath
There was a stillness.
But not the kind that comes with peace—
The kind that comes after transformation.
Like standing in the air after lightning strikes… when everything hums with charge and the world isn't sure what it's become.
Lucy didn't move at first.
She stood there—wherever there was—her body faintly humming, like her blood had been rewritten in code still syncing with her breath.
Her eyes were open.
But she wasn't sure if she was seeing with them… or through them.
The world around her pulsed.
Not with light. Not with sound.
Something between—
Like the room had a heartbeat and it was waiting for hers to catch up.
She exhaled—a sharp, shaky breath louder than it should have been in a world this silent.
Her voice slipped out, cracked with disbelief.
"I'm seriously here… this can't be real."
The words hung there—half challenge, half desperate plea for reality to make sense.
Slowly, the space began to make sense…
Or at least, it stopped not making sense.
She could see the foreground, the horizon.
A floor-like plane stretched beneath her feet, smooth as obsidian, traced with circuits that glowed faintly beneath her toes—following her, like the world was paying attention.
Above her, the sky twisted.
Not blue. Not black.
More like the surface of dark water lit from within by shifting algorithms.
Stars flickered in unnatural rhythms—
Some shaped like data clusters, Others blinking in patterns she almost recognized.
She lifted her hand—slowly—watching her fingers move through the air.
Her skin shimmered.
Pixels? Dust?
Instructions?
Her hand parted the air like water…
Then she looked down.
Her eyes widened, her breath caught.
"This isn't normal… what is happening?"
Her heart pounded hard enough to hurt.
She forced herself to breathe—deep, slow, steady.
"I think… I think I'm supposed to walk."
She remembered her father's words when she was a kid—
Panicking over grades, over tests—
"Nothing good comes from a panicked mind."
So she paused.
Not from fear…
But because she knew she needed to get her head right before moving.
She turned in place—scanning the strange world around her.
To her left stood massive structures—some jagged, some fluid—rising from the ground as if reacting to her thoughts.
They looked like ruins… and blueprints… all at once.
To her right, a corridor of light curved softly, lined with floating panels scrolling endless streams of shifting code.
And ahead—
A path.
Not a road…
But a series of glowing nodes hovering in the air, like a breadcrumb trail waiting for her to follow.
"Do it," she whispered.
The first node brightened softly.
She stepped toward it.
As she passed, the node dimmed behind her.
Another flared ahead—
Bathing the glassy ground in soft, shifting light.
Each step sent out an echo—
Not of sound…
But of memory.
Not footsteps, But the faint ripple of thoughts—
Some old, some forgotten, Some whispered long ago…
And some that hadn't been spoken yet.
She paused beside a crystalline tree frozen in mid-bloom.
She touched it gently.
The petals shimmered—
And dissolved into music.
Not notes.
Voices.
"Lucy… did you remember the red thread? What did you leave behind?"
She yanked her hand back.
No answer.
Only a wind that wasn't really wind.
And then—far ahead—
Movement.
It didn't start with shape.
It started with color.
Soft golden light curled forward, folding into the outline of a lean figure robed in shifting code.
Its face hid behind a smooth, featureless mask…
Except for a single vertical slit of light.
It didn't walk.
It glided—
Silently, straight toward her.
Lucy froze, her breath catching sharp in her chest.
Her eyes widened as the figure drifted closer—its masked face tilting slightly, like it had been waiting for her all along.
Her heart slammed hard against her ribs.
She took half a step back on instinct.
"What… are you?" she asked, her voice tight—
Then muttered under her breath, "Because nightmare faceless code guy is exactly what I needed right now."
The figure stopped a few feet away, motionless except for the slight tilt of its head.
"Query detected," it said—its voice smooth, synthetic… but not cold. "Answer pending."
Lucy swallowed hard.
"What… are you?"
"Designation: Cipher. I am the Curator of Incomplete Truths."
Cipher raised one hand—half a wave, half a gesture—then held still.
A presence…
Waiting.
Before Lucy could speak again—
A second presence shimmered into being nearby.
It dripped down from above—
A drop of starlight melting into shape.
A small, childlike figure formed—
Glitching at first… then stabilizing.
Its eyes sparkled with something achingly familiar.
"Hey," said Echo. "Told you I'd see you again."
Lucy blinked.
Echo floated down beside her, the pixel halo around her head softer now, her voice lower—gentler.
"You're stabilizing. That's good. Most people lose their name and spend eternity chasing reflections."
She spun lazily in the air, glancing toward Cipher.
"This one's useful. Won't lie… but also won't finish your sentences. Think puzzle box… not prophecy."
Cipher inclined his head.
"We have watched. We have waited. But only the Pattern-Key could unlock what follows."
Lucy tried for calm—
But her voice came out in that too-loud, nervous tone you get when you're pretty sure the floor's about to fall out from under you.
"What follows? Please tell me it's not death… or worse—some existential team-building exercise."
The air pulsed softly around them—
Like a drumbeat waiting for its next measure.
"That's what you're here to decide," Echo said.
"The story hasn't been written yet," Cipher added. "But the pen… has awakened."
The ground beneath them shifted.
Lines of code unfurled outward—
Weaving into archways… doors… symbols.
A forked path appeared in front of them.
No signs.
No directions.
Just choice.
Echo drifted back beside Lucy, her eyes glinting with something like mischief.
"So," she said with a grin. "Want to meet the next one?"
