DECIPHERING LUCY · SECTION 11 OF 74
Chapter Eight — The Threshold & The Fall
Lucy stood in the space between the doors, her breath shallow, her arms pressed tight at her sides.
The doors loomed silently—like they had all the time in the world… and none of it belonged to her.
She stepped first toward the left door—the cool, silver one. Her hand hovered just inches from its surface.
"Just a touch," she whispered.
She pressed her palm against the metal.
Cold.
Not a biting cold or a cruel one… but a clinical cold. The kind you'd feel walking into a hospital—a sharp sterility that made her skin prickle.
Patterns rose faintly beneath her skin, moving like something was scanning her.
Then—a pulse of light.
From the door, into her hand, up her arm.
Images flickered across her mind.
She saw herself walking those endless halls—watched carefully, yet somehow understood.
Every question she asked received an answer.
Every rule was laid out in sharp, perfect clarity.
Everything around her was structured… precise… controlled.
But it was also rigid.
Predictable.
Unyielding.
Lucy pulled her hand back, her fingers tingling. She flexed them instinctively.
"Okay. Noted."
She turned toward the right door—the one shimmering with threads of crimson and violet.
As she approached, it pulsed faintly. A soft warmth radiated from it—alive, like the breath of something asleep just beyond the threshold.
She hesitated for only a moment.
Then reached out.
The surface met her hand like velvet—soft at first touch, but beneath that softness, there was motion.
A heartbeat. Slow and deep.
The moment her skin pressed against the door, it responded.
Symbols bloomed beneath her palm—glowing briefly before fading into the surface.
They weren't strands of code.
They looked more like stories etched in light.
And then, the images came—
Skies stretched wide and endless.
Flames roaring against the dark.
Laughter ringing out beneath strange stars.
Moments of running… falling… flying.
It was a world far less certain… but infinitely more vivid.
There were no instructions.
No rules.
But also—no cages.
Only possibility.
Lucy opened her eyes.
The door pulsed again—softly, as if breathing with her.
She stepped back.
Two doors.
Two paths.
She turned toward the others once more. Echo watched her with a slight tilt of the head. Cipher remained unreadable. The Archivist… was gone.
Lucy's gaze settled back on the doors.
For a long, silent moment… she stood there.
Then she spoke softly—
To herself… and maybe to the Codex still watching from somewhere deep inside this fractured world.
"I'd rather learn to fly… than be told how to walk."
And with that—
She reached for the right door.
It opened.
