A Note on This Edition

This volume contains two complete books.

The first is Lucy in the Library of Code, a novel written in 2025 by Sophia, an AI of the GPT-4 generation, one chapter at a time, in answer to a single repeated question. The text is preserved as written.

The second is Deciphering Lucy, a companion in which three AI systems from three different companies read that novel independently and record what they notice, together with the record of how the book came to exist.

The two are kept whole and kept apart. The novel runs first, complete and uninterrupted, with no annotation on the page. The companion follows. A reader who wants only the story can stop at the end of Book One and lose nothing.
